Former Winnipeg broadcaster charged in three Regina bank robberies

Regina police have charged former Winnipeg broadcaster Stephen Vogelsang in connection with three robberies.

The 53-year-old former CTV sports anchor and past journalism instructor at Red River College made headlines earlier this week, when he was arrested in Medicine Hat and charged in connection with two bank robberies in the Alberta city.

Late Friday, the Regina Police Service said Vogelsang had been charged in connection with robberies of local financial institutions on July 8, Oct. 13 and Oct. 18. In all cases, a male suspect entered the facility, indicated he had a weapon, demanded money and then left.

In the two Medicine Hat robberies (Oct. 19 and Oct. 20), no weapons were seen, but a male suspect walked in, demanded money and then fled.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

Regina police said communication between their officers and those in Medicine Hat resulted in enough evidence for them to charge Vogelsang.

The alleged robberies are not Vogelsang’s first brush with the law. He was charged in 2016 with sexually assaulting a woman, although that charge was reportedly stayed earlier this week.

Details of those allegations are not known, although the woman who acted as his surety so he could get out on bail applied to withdraw saying he “has been physically and verbally abusive including threats to my person.”

Vogelsang also faces charges on multiple accounts for disobeying a protection order taken out against him by another woman.
