The Blue Bombers Jamaal Westerman is making quite a name for himself in his first season in the Canadian Football League.

The defensive end for the Blue and Gold not only leads the league in sacks with 15 through 18 weeks, he’s also been handed down the most fines in the CFL, earning his fourth from the league on Thursday for a low hit on Ottawa quarterback, Henry Burris, during a 27-20 loss to the Redblacks on Saturday.

“Health and safety is of paramount consideration when it comes to the players in our league and we need to ensure we take the necessary steps to protect them,” said Jeffrey L. Orridge, Commissioner of the Canadian Football League, in a statement released by the league.

After a hearing – a meeting which included Westerman, representation from the CFLPA, as well as Orridge himself – the league decided to impose the max fine on Westerman – a fine that as per league policy, has not been made public.

On the play, Burris had just thrown what turned out to be a 51-yard touchdown pass to Chris Williams, when Westerman appeared to come in late and low, forcing Burris to the ground where he laid there holding his knee. Burris missed limited time before returning in the second half to lead Ottawa to victory.

Westerman and the rest of the 5-12 Bombers are currently on a bye week, and will wrap up their final game of the season against the Toronto Argonauts on Friday, Nov. 6.
