Chris Kitching

Reporter

Chris was born and raised in Portage la Prairie, where the Free Press was a daily read in his family’s home.

While his dad pored over the A section after dinner, elementary school-aged Chris went straight for the sports pages, the latest instalment of Calvin and Hobbes and the Jumble puzzle.

Decades later in 2021, Chris joined the newspaper he grew up reading. As a general assignment reporter, he covers a little bit of everything for the Free Press.

He takes particular interest in happenings outside the Perimeter, and enjoys meeting Manitobans and sharing their unique stories with the rest of the province.

Chris began his journalism career in 2001 after dropping off a resume and cover letter at his hometown paper, the Daily Graphic, on a whim.

Since completing Red River College’s Creative Communications program in 2005, he’s worked in print, digital and TV newsrooms in Winnipeg, Toronto and London, England.

After seven years in the U.K., Chris returned home to Manitoba. He lives with his wife and daughter, an elementary school student who flips straight to comics and puzzles when she opens a newspaper.
