PREDAZZO – Calgary ski jumper Abigail Strate finished 11th in the women’s large hill competition on Sunday at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

After finishing third in the trial round, the 24-year-old Strate scored 106.9 points on her first jump, putting her in 26th place. She then earned 136.7 on her second attempt, boosting her up the ranks and leaving her with a combined score of 243.6.

Strate said challenging wind conditions impacted her result.

“Third in the trial round boosted my confidence. I felt good going into the competition round, but I had no chance with the wind conditions,” said Strate. “I got really bad luck. I got in the air and there was no opportunity to fly far. I’m a little disappointed that was taken away from me.”

The sport’s Olympic debut saw Norway claim gold and silver with Anna Odine Strøm scoring 284.8, followed by Eirin Maria Kvandal’s 282.7.

Slovenia’s Nika Prevc won bronze with a score of 271.5.

Calgary’s Nicole Maurer also competed in the event, coming in 20th with a score of 222.60 in her Olympic debut.

Strate was part of the team that won Canada’s first Olympic ski jumping medal with a bronze in the mixed event at the 2022 Beijing Games.

Strate won five of her six World Cup medals this season in large hill, including a gold on Jan. 1 in Germany.

Earlier in the Games, Strate placed 11th in the women’s normal hill competition that also saw Strøm claim gold.

“I felt lighter than I have all Olympics. I wanted to end on a good note and prove to myself that I could do it — and I did,” said Strate. “I finished with a smile, looked at my family, and I’m really proud to end like that.”
