Job Title: Assistant City Editor – Breaking News

Wage Rate:  As per Collective Agreement

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement the City/ News Editor’s goals and objectives relating to news coverage for print and the digital platform.
  • Perform all duties of the City/ News Editor in his/her absence, as required.
  • Produce and/or edit Breaking news for website posting.
  • Directly supervise city desk reporters, columnists, freelance writers and interns.
  • Assist and advise the City/ News Editor on beat and assignment accountability for city desk reporters, columnists freelance writers and interns.
  • Develop ideas for news and news feature coverage, photography and graphics in conjunction with the City/ News Editor and reporters.
  • Make daily recommendations on selection and play to the City/ News Editor, as required.
  • Edit stories.
  • Assist and advise the City/ News Editor on a plan of professional staff development designed to achieve the goals and objectives of both the newspaper and City Desk staff.
  • Take part in inter-departmental projects on behalf of City Desk.
  • Other general duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary Journalism accreditation, or equivalent daily newspaper experience.
  • Considerable experience in daily newspaper editorial operations.
  • Commitment to the editorial mission statement and City Desk action plan.
  • Excellent knowledge of provincial and local affairs.
  • Excellent editing skills, writing skills and news judgement.
  • Good management, interpersonal, motivational and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Free Press computer system, Free Press style and newspaper layout.
  • Must project a professional public image on behalf of the newspaper.
  • Must understand the importance of customer service.
