THE second National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will be marked today, as people across the country take time to reflect on and honour those who suffered under the residential school system.

There were 140 residential schools in Canada run by the federal government between 1831 and 1996, and more than 150,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit children attended those schools. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and Winnipeg-based National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation have documented more than 4,000 deaths at those schools.

Manitoba has yet to mark the day a statutory holiday — a statement from the province this month said consultations with Indigenous leadership and others affected are still underway. Many businesses are still offering the day off or providing programming related to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Provincial and civic employees have been given the day off, and schools across Manitoba will be closed.

The Free Press will publish both a print and e-edition Friday.

Here’s a selection of what’s open and closed on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation:
