The Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped a 3-2 decision to the Kansas City Monarchs Tuesday night at Shaw Park, the fourth consecutive defeat for the hosts.
Down by three, the Fish and their fans were energized by a one-out, two-run home run by Reggie Pruitt Jr., in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Raul Navarro went down swinging and Ian Sagdal flied out to right field to end the contest.
Winnipeg (50-45) mustered eight hits, including two singles apiece by Max Murphy, Deon Stafford Jr. and Kevin Lachance.
Monarchs’ starting pitcher Matt Hill worked six shutout innings, striking out 10 while walking just two Fish hitters. Kansas City (61-34) has won seven in a row.
Winnipeg starter Freisis Adames yielded two runs on just three hits and a pair of walks over five innings. Mallex Smith, who has more than 400 major-league games under his belt, swatted a fifth-inning home run for the visitors.
The Goldeyes, third in the West Division and headed to the American Association playoffs, meet the surging Monarchs (61-34) for the final time Wednesday evening, take Thursday off and then open a four-game series against the last-place Sioux Falls Canaries to close out the regular season.
