What’s open/closed this Canada Day weekend

MANITOBA joins with the rest of the country Friday in celebrating Canada Day — with many official celebrations subdued in the wake of last year’s reckoning over the legacy of residential schools.

Many businesses and government services change their hours over the Canada Day weekend. Here’s a selection:

COVID-19 TEST SITES

Only those who are eligible for PCR testing can access it at Dakota Medical Centre or Minor Illness & Injury Clinic (both appointment only).

SHOPPING

Grant Park Shopping Centre, Kildonan Place, St. Vital Centre and Garden City Shopping Centre will be closed Canada Day. Polo Park and Outlet Collection will open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Forks Market is open regular hours from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Most grocery stores are open with reduced hours. Most Safeway and Sobeys are open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Superstore from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Walmart from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Most Manitoba Liquor Mart stores in Winnipeg operate 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with some closing at 5 p.m. For details on exceptions and rural Liquor Mart hours, visit www.LiquorMarts.ca/hours.

Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own hours for the holiday, so Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corp. suggests calling to find out if the one near you will be open.

ENTERTAINMENT

Assiniboine Park Zoo is open Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Manitoba Museum is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Children’s Museum is open 9:30 am. to 4:30 p.m.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Movie theatres are open regular hours.

RECYCLING AND TRASH

Recycling and garbage will be collected as normal for residents with Friday as their collection day.

The Brady Road landfill is open 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., while the Brady recycling depot is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES

City of Winnipeg outdoor pools and spray pads will be open, but wading pools will begin opening on a staggered basis starting July 1.

All indoor pools in the city will be closed.

The city’s fitness and leisure centres will be closed on July 1.

The Crescent Drive, Kildonan Park and Windsor Park golf courses will be open from sunrise to sunset.

WINNIPEG TRANSIT

On Friday, buses will operate on a Sunday schedule, with additional bus service on Route 11 Portage from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and service extensions for routes that exit downtown until about 12:40 a.m. For route and schedule details, visit WinnipegTransit.com or contact 311.

LIBRARIES

All Winnipeg Public Library branches are closed Friday.

CEMETERIES

Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona cemetery grounds are open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Brookside Cemetery’s offices will be closed on the holiday.

GOVERNMENT SERVICES

Civic, provincial and federal offices are closed July 1.

The Winnipeg Parking Authority’s Portage Avenue location remains closed.

The Winnipeg Animal Services Agency is closed Canada Day.

There is no mail delivery or collection July 1. Canada Post offices are closed, but post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
