The final design of the province’s Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal has been unveiled.

Lt.-Gov. Janice Filmon said 1,000 Manitobans will be presented with the medal throughout the jubilee year, marking the British monarch’s 70th year as Queen.

“The anniversary of her seven decades of service to Canada is most certainly an occasion to be celebrated and, with this medal, we are afforded the opportunity to thank and recognize our citizens who have similarly devoted their time and energy in service to others for the betterment of their community, province or country,” Filmon said Thursday in a statement.

The medal, made of copper and plated with nickel, shows the Queen on one side, while on the back is the Manitoba shield of arms, along with the Queen’s royal cypher. It comes with a blue, red and white ribbon used for past coronation and jubilee medals.

Recipients will be chosen by a group made up of MLAs, Indigenous leadership organizations, Filmon, Premier Heather Stefanson and Opposition Leader Wab Kinew.
