Low water level reveals vehicle in river

Low water levels in the Red River have caused a long submerged vehicle to emerge from the depths.

The dark coloured vehicle, in the river just south of the Provencher Bridge towards the shore on the St. Boniface side, was spotted late last week by passersby who contacted the city’s emergency services.

Winnipeg police spokesman Const. Jay Murray said on Saturday the service’s dive unit has been notified and will be checking out the vehicle. He said they have no idea how old the vehicle is or how it got there.

“The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was the first agency that responded to this,” said Murray.

City spokesman Kalen Qually confirmed WFPS personnel went to the vehicle on Friday.

“It was determined the car had been in the water for a long period of time and no rescue operation was required,” said Qually.
