A resident of Parkview Place Care Centre in downtown Winnipeg has died of COVID-19, marking the 19th virus-related death in the province since the start of the pandemic.

“The team at Parkview Place is heartbroken and offer their most sincere condolences to the person we have lost to the pandemic,” Rhonda Collins, chief medical officer at care-home operator Revera, said in a statement Tuesday.

The individual who died had previously tested positive for the virus, as have six other residents of the care home and one staff member, Collins said.

The employee who tested positive remains at home in self-isolation and the centre is awaiting test results for other residents and staff.

Multiple floors at Parkview Place have been affected by the outbreak, and the centre is undergoing enhanced cleaning, including disinfecting high-touch surfaces such as handrails and doors, resident rooms, common areas and staff rooms, the statement said.

“All staff continue to wear the appropriate PPE pwhich includes a surgical mask, gloves and eye protection in the home when in contact with residents,” Collins said.

In consultation with Manitoba Public Health, the care home has also adjusted some of its day-to-day activities to help promote physical distancing, including serving meals directly to residents who live on affected floors, and replacing group recreation with one-on-one activities.

Residents are being monitored for symptoms twice daily, and staff are screened at the beginning and end of their shifts, Collins said. Only essential visits are currently allowed.

“We are currently updating residents, their families and the staff of the status of the outbreak and will continue to provide regular updates,” Collins said.

The province has yet to confirm the death, which a spokesperson for Revera said occurred Tuesday. No information has been released about the individual who died.

Seven Manitobans have died of COVID-19 in care-home facilities since the onset of the pandemic, including four at Bethesda Place in Steinbach, one at Poseidon Care Centre in Winnipeg and one at Brandon’s Assiniboine Centre.
