ATLANTA – Newly acquired relievers Brandon Workman, Heath Hembree and David Hale were active for Philadelphia’s game against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night.

The Phillies added the three right-handers, acquired in trades on Friday, to their 28-man roster as part of a flurry of moves.

The Phillies acquired Workman and Hembree from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for right-handers Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold. Hale was obtained from the New York Yankees in a deal for minor league right-hander Addison Russ.

Workman, who had four saves in four opportunities with the Red Sox, said he was told of the trade during the third inning of Boston’s game at Baltimore on Friday night.

“I was on my way down to the bullpen,” Workman said Saturday. “The dugout called me out to tell me I had been traded.”

Workman said he had heard speculation about a possible trade. He said it was “kind of a surprise” to get the news during the game.

Right-hander Hector Neris has two saves in five chances this season for Philadelphia. The Phillies’ bullpen entered Friday night’s game with a 7.59 ERA, by far the worst in the majors.

Workman said he hasn’t been told by manager Joe Girardi if he will have the opportunity to pitch the ninth inning.

“Whenever I’m called upon I want to throw the ball as well as I can, whatever inning or role he sees fit,” Workman said. “I just want to perform as well as I can.”

The Phillies also reinstated outfielder Adam Haseley from the 10-day injured list. He had been out since Aug. 12 with a left wrist sprain.

Outfielder Jay Bruce was placed on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Friday, with a left quad strain that limited his ability to run.

“We need to knock it out so he can be a complete player for us,” Girardi said of Bruce.

Right-hander Connor Brogdon and left-hander Cole Irvin were sent to the team’s alternate training site. Right-hander Deolis Guerra was designated for assignment.
