A Grant Park high school teacher has been charged with sexually assaulting three students, beginning last fall, in incidents police believe happened away from school property.

Aylicia Klein, 27, who taught special education and was a coach, was charged in late February with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student.

On Thursday, she turned herself in to police to face new charges after allegations involving two other students surfaced.

The Winnipeg Police Service announced the additional charges Friday afternoon, hours after Klein was released from custody at the police headquarters with the consent of the Crown prosecutor on a $10,000 bail.

Via a video hearing, she was instructed to follow court-ordered conditions, including not contacting any of the complainants, deleting them from her social media accounts, and abiding by a nightly curfew.

Though police didn’t release Klein’s name, court documents confirm her identity. Police have said they would not name her to protect the identities of the victims.

Klein has been on administrative leave since before her initial arrest, said Winnipeg School Division spokeswoman Radean Carter. She said the teacher was placed on leave when the school became aware of the allegations, and that the school notified police. Carter said she couldn’t provide any other details.

“We really just are not able to make any comment or speak about any issues that are before the courts,” she said Friday.

Police confirmed the victims were students, but wouldn’t specify their ages or gender for their protection. During a news conference Friday, Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Rob Carver said he couldn’t say whether the victims decided to contact police, or whether investigators approached them.

When the initial charges were laid, police said the teacher was accused of supplying alcohol to multiple students.

“Investigators fairly early on had identified, really, a potential pool of victims. It took a while for the investigation to get to a point where we could lay the additional charges, but I think the investigators had a real good sense as to what happened, when and how it happened,” Carver said Friday.

“The charges were initially laid because in a situation like this, where you’ve got someone who’s working as a teacher, we need to move fairly quickly once things are, kind of, set out. We have the ability to then take our time and confirm details of additional victims.”

Police believe they’ve identified all victims in this case, Carver said.

“We feel fairly confident we’ve identified everybody, but if there’s someone else who had a situation where they feel what happened to them constituted a crime or sexual assault, or they feel that they have some additional information, come forward.”

Klein is charged with nine criminal offences involving three students, including three counts of sexual assault which are alleged to have occurred between Nov. 1, 2019 and Feb. 27, 2020, court documents state. In addition to being ordered not to contact the three complainants, she is prohibited from contacting two other individuals.

She was formerly listed as a soccer coach for boys teams at Grant Park high school.
