Woman’s death under investigation as first homicide of the year

A woman is dead and a man has been arrested in the city’s first homicide of 2020.

On Friday night at about 6:15 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service were called to a house in the 100 block of Hindley Avenue, where officers found a woman in critical condition. She was then taken to hospital, where she died.

A man was arrested in connection with the death, the police said in a release, though they didn’t say whether the two knew one another. More information is expected to be released Monday.

On Saturday afternoon, the police’s homicide unit was still at the house, and the front yard had been taped off. A van from the Winnipeg Humane Society was also idling in front of the house, and a staff member told the Free Press no pets were injured. The van was there to provide shelter and care to animals in the home, they said.

Neighbours on Hindley Avenue said they had no idea what happened, but said the street is normally quite quiet. One woman said the house where police were positioned had been sold about a year ago.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
