Wyatt sex-assault case adjourned until September

The case against Winnipeg city Coun. Russ Wyatt made it to court Tuesday afternoon.

The 48-year-old representative for Transcona didn’t appear in person when his case landed on the provincial court docket for the first time. A representative for his lawyer, Evan Roitenberg, asked for the case to be adjourned for three weeks so defence and Crown lawyers can have discussions.

Wyatt’s next court date is Sept. 18, on another date-setting docket.

He’s charged with one count of sexual assault on an adult woman in a city home on Jan. 13. Police have said Wyatt and the woman knew each other, and described the alleged incident as a “serious sexual assault,” a term they typically use to mean rape.

“I have no comment to make regarding the allegation against me, other than to say that I am innocent of any wrongdoing. I will defend myself in a court of law and will only respond further to the allegation in a court room,” Wyatt wrote in a statement to the Free Press after his arrest in July.

Wyatt appeared at a council committee meeting at city hall earlier this month.

He revealed in the spring he spent time in a rehab centre recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. The conditions imposed on him while his case is before the court prohibit him from consuming alcohol or drugs.
