Allard says he’s not eyeing provincial seat in St. Boniface

St. Boniface city councillor Matt Allard said Friday he has no plans to seek the provincial NDP nomination in the St. Boniface riding should MLA Greg Selinger resign.

“No one knows other than Greg Selinger when he will resign or if he will run again other than him. I am not running for MLA now or in 2020. I love being a city councillor,” Allard told the Free Press.

“I am not planning to run for the NDP or any party. I am running for re-election for city council in St. Boniface, which is a job I love and am proud of the work I’ve been doing and excited about what we can accomplish in the future,” he said.

NDP Leader Wab Kinew’s press secretary Rorie Mcleod Arnould said Friday afternoon that Kinew has not talked to any potential candidates about running in St. Boniface.

Allard said he was approached last year to consider a possible provincial run for the NDP should Selinger step down, but he declined.

He said no one has contacted him since Tuesday, when Kinew demanded that Selinger resign his seat over numerous complaints of sexual misconduct by former cabinet minister Stan Struthers on Selinger’s watch.
