Connecticut’s Alyssa Thomas has crashed the MVP race between A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart

Pat Eaton-robb, The Associated Press 4 minute read Monday, Sep. 11, 2023

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart head into the playoffs this week as the top contenders to become the WNBA's most valuable player.

That's no surprise. They are the two superstars on the league's two “super teams” — the Las Vegas Aces (34-6) and the New York Liberty (32-8).

But there is a third contender for MVP as well.

Connecticut's Alyssa Thomas has played her way into the conversation, recording a league-record six triple-doubles in leading the Sun (27-13) to the No. 3 seed.

Kilde wins World Cup super-G, edges home Swiss racers

The Associated Press 2 minute read Friday, Jan. 13, 2023

WENGEN, Switzerland (AP) — Aleksander Aamodt Kilde spoiled a Swiss party Friday by winning a World Cup super-G on the country's storied Lauberhorn mountain.

The Norwegian blew kisses to the noisy local fans in the finish area after edging home racers Stefan Rogentin and Marco Odermatt. Kilde, the 2022 Olympic bronze medalist in super-G, also held his arms out wide as if asking for the crowd to forgive him.

Rogentin, who got a career-best result in second place with his first podium finish at age 28, was 0.27 seconds behind Kilde. Odermatt trailed Kilde by 0.66 seconds to extend his streak of top-three finishes in super-G to four races this season.

With lower-ranked racers yet to start, the strong Swiss team had three more men in the top 10, including seventh-place Beat Feuz in one of his farewell races. The 35-year-old Olympic downhill champion will retire after racing next weekend in Kitzbühel, Austria.

The Canadian Press 1 minute read Friday, Jan. 13, 2023

Evacuees have been cleared to return to homes and businesses in St. Catharines, Ont., as officials investigate what caused a fire at a hazardous waste facility the city's north end.

Crews say the fire was extinguished Thursday evening and that people living in a neighbourhood north of the facility, evacuated earlier in the day as plumes of black smoke billowed towards the area, could return.

St. Catharines fire Chief Dave Upper says Ontario's Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, which broke out shortly after 6:30 a.m. Thursday at Ssonix Products 2010 Inc.

The lone worker inside the facility when the fire broke out Thursday morning was taken to hospital with serious burns.

Gerrie Coetzee, former WBA heavyweight champ, dies at 67

Gerald Imray, The Associated Press 4 minute read Friday, Jan. 13, 2023

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Gerrie Coetzee, a former South African boxer and WBA heavyweight champion who defied some of his country's racist laws during the height of apartheid in the 1970s and 1980s and won popularity with Nelson Mandela and both Black and white fans, has died. He was 67.

Coetzee died on Thursday in Cape Town just over a week after being diagnosed with lung cancer, his former manager, Thinus Strydom, said Friday.

Coetzee, who was white, was the first African boxer to win a world heavyweight title. He knocked out American rival Michael Dokes in the 10th round in Richfield, Ohio, in 1983 to win the WBA belt, a big upset that was celebrated throughout South Africa despite it being fragmented at the time by the apartheid laws of racial segregation.

Coetzee's victory also made him the first white boxer to win a world heavyweight title in more than 20 years but he made clear after the fight against Dokes how much he disliked being labeled “the great white hope.”

‘Safety’s number 1:’ tiny home village for homeless opens in Winnipeg

Brittany Hobson, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Friday, Jan. 13, 2023

WINNIPEG - Bundles of dried sage tied together with red ribbon hang from black fixtures connected to wood-panelled walls.

The space — in a building known simply as "the lodge" — may be small, but it is mighty in meaning.

Outside, nearly two dozen colourful apartment units form a circle. A sacred fire sits bull's-eye.

It's Winnipeg's first tiny home village for people experiencing homelessness, dubbed Astum Api Niikinaahk or "come sit at our home" in Michif, a language spoken by many Métis.
