Two-sport athlete dreams big

Josh Caspillo is a 14-year-old Grade 9 student at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé.

Josh loves his sports, especially basketball and soccer.

“I play basketball for my school’s JV team and for club I play for 204 Elite Basketball. Being a part of 204 Elite has helped me a lot from a technical standpoint,” he said.

“I have been playing basketball since I was in Grade 1. I usually play small forward. I like playing that position because I get to be very creative and help our team score a lot. I like to dribble and work on my moves with the ball.”

Josh also plays soccer with the World Soccer Academy program and said he doesn’t have a favourite between the two — he enjoys playing both.

“This is my second year with WSA. The coaches there help to make everyone better. I have been playing soccer since I was five,” he said. I usually play left fullback or wing. My favourite part of playing soccer is all of the teamwork involved and being strategic.”

Josh lives in St. Vital with his mom Cecile, dad Robert, brother Jacob, and sister Kaylee.

“My mom and dad spend a lot of time taking me everywhere for sports. They work really hard so my brother and I can play sport,” he said. They do a great job of taking care of all of us and supporting us.”

Josh is focused right now on getting better at each sport as each day goes by. After high school, he would like to maybe pursue one goal.

“With basketball I would like to play at a higher level when I get older, maybe at a college or university. I will keep working hard and we will see what happens,” he said.

Josh is a busy young man, juggling the two sports he enjoys so with being a student.

“School is going well,” he said. “I am getting good marks. My favourite class right now is architecture. I like being creative, and I like all of the planning involved.”

He thinks playing the two sports helps to make him better at each.

“Soccer and basketball complement each other with helping my skill. They both help me to move faster and think faster,” he said. “The bottom line is I just really like playing both sports.”

Josh has this to offer other athletes and he hopes everyone keeps playing the sports they love:
