Lohri Mela 2023
January 14, 2023 @ 4:00 AM - 11:30 AM
FreeJanuary 14th 2023 from 4:00 pm at RBC Convention Centre. We are hosting “Lohri Mela – A Cultural Festival of New Beginnings”. Event is free to all regardless of age, gender and ethnicity.
Cultural performances along with parents of newborn babies and newlywed couples acknowledge/welcome new family members in their family. There will be a mini bazaar/stalls of ethnic clothing, jewellry, food, drinks plus a cash bar. A separate kid’s section will have bouncy castle, face painting, henna tattoos, candy floss and colouring competition.
“Lohri” was originally celebrated on winter solstice day, being the shortest day and the longest night of the year to denote the last of the coldest days of winter. Lohri is celebrated mostly in houses that have recently had a marriage or childbirth to welcome the new member in the family. Lohri celebrations will reach a higher pitch of excitement. The bonfire is lit at sunset in the main village square. People toss sesame seeds, sugar-candy and other sweets onto the bonfire, sit around it, sing and dance till the fire dies out. Some people perform a prayer and go around the fire. This is to show respect to the natural element of fire. This ritual is performed for thanking the Sun God and seeking his continued protection.
With great pride and joy, we invite you and your family to be a part of this event. It will be an excellent platform to further develop and establish your connection with the community.
