The new year often finds many people resolving to work on their fitness. If that’s your plan in 2023, good for you! I want you to find success, so I’ve put together my top tips for starting a fitness program. Many people start strong in January and then fall away from new habits. I want you to gain momentum fast so you can enjoy improved health and fitness all year.

• First, don’t be intimidated. I very much understand that it can be scary to start something new, but modern gyms aren’t sink-or-swim facilities full of arrogant people. When selecting a gym, ask how new people can get comfortable. Great gyms will have an answer. Once you’ve joined the right club, ask staff and other members any questions you might have. Most gym goers are only too happy to help another person enjoy their favourite hobby.

• Next, set some short-, medium- and long-term goals. Make sure they’re clear and measurable. Then track your progress toward them for a motivation boost. Here’s a great short-term goal: get to the gym three times a week for one month. Need something in the mid-range? Try this: get to the gym 12-15 times per month for six months straight.

• Another tip: link up with a gym friend regularly. A training partner will provide support and accountability. When you’re feeling low, lean on your buddy, and offer support in return when your partner needs it. You’ll help each other stay on track, and you’ll have a great time socializing as you do. If your workout partner happens to be a life partner, so much the better.

• Here’s an important tip: be patient. Change takes time, so don’t feel frustrated if you don’t see dramatic progress in a single month. Just know that if you work out about 10-15 times in a month, your body will start changing. It might just take you a little time to notice. Keep going to the gym. Without fail, someone will mention a noticeable change that you didn’t see, or perhaps you’ll discover you can lift more or train longer. When you notice a change, celebrate. You’ve earned it!

• This “workout tip” might surprise you: do some work in the kitchen, too. If you pair training with improved nutrition, you’ll earn results much faster. It’s often said that working out and eating poorly is like rowing with one oar. My simple tip is to eat more veggies and lean protein. That basic adjustment will do wonders for your workouts.

Finally, if you don’t know where to start, ask a professional for help. Few people try to fix a car without training as a mechanic. Yet many people get frustrated trying to figure out how to work out properly. If you’re confused, frustrated or not getting results, link up with a trained coach who can help. Modern fitness professionals aren’t ruthless drill sergeants who yell. They’re caring experts who want to help you reach your goals. Sometimes a little assistance is all you need to find amazing success.

Here’s to improved health and fitness in 2023!
