Chip and Pepper Foster, the identical twins famous for the late-’80s/early-’90s line of tie-dyed clothing and a short-lived NBC TV cartoon series, were revealed on Jan. 4 as new owners of KUB Bakery, the iconic Winnipeg rye bread maker which closed in November 2022.

“We used to go clubbing — now we’re going Kubbing,” Pepper Foster joked at a press conference at KUB’s former premises on Erin Street.

The Fosters said they grew up in the food business. Elman’s Food Products was founded by their grandfather, Samuel Finkleman in 1938 and operated by their father, Manny, until his death in 2004. Their stepmother, Millie Krause, still runs the business.

Pepper added that the purchase includes recipes for over 100 KUB products. The Fosters have not decided how many different recipes they will retain but their primary focus will be on the bakery’s iconic rye bread. Small producers in Selkirk, Elm Creek and Roblin, Man., are already turning out loaves.

Pepper, who lives in Winnipeg with his family, currently owns Pennyloaf Bakery on Corydon Avenue. Chip lives in Los Angeles, where he oversees their line of boutique denim clothing. They said they hope to scale up production of KUB (the acronym stands for Kucher’s Ukrainian Bakery) within 120 days and are looking at spaces in which they will base their operations.
