Winnipeg is often referred to as the “community centre capital of Canada,” for this city was the originator of the community centre concept in this country.
There are 63 volunteer-based community centres located in all districts of Winnipeg; however, many new Canadians and young families are not familiar with the wide range of excellent sports, recreation opportunities, cultural events and community services that community centres can provide for all age groups.
Many of the activities and programs at community centres are provided at no cost, such as free gym time and free skating time.
Community centres are non-profit organizations. The buildings and grounds are the properties of the City of Winnipeg.
North Winnipeg is served by 14 community centres. All these centres are run by volunteer boards of directors which meet monthly and are supported by a team of volunteers. The boards are elected annually by their area residents.
You can contact your neighbourhood centre for programs or find a complete listing of programs at: www.gcwcc.mb.ca under Community Centres and Programs.
The 63 community centres are represented and supported by the city and through the General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres (GCWCC). The GCWCC, in partnership with the City of Winnipeg’s community services department, provides support services to all community centres including: program/activity development, board development, financial accountability, program grants, capital grants, leadership and volunteer training.
For more information, please visit the GCWCC website or phone 204-475-5008.
Our communities and demographics are changing and the programs and activities at community centres are also diverse. Seniors activities, healthy living seminars and new sports are featured in several community centres.
The annual general meeting of Maples CC will be held on May 26, at 2 p.m. at 434 Adsum Drive. Area residents are cordially invited.
And, remember, community centres always welcome volunteers!
